LISA MACDONALD

ARTIST STATEMENT

Contemporary artist Lisa MacDonald’s paintings teeter between safety and vulnerability, permeating the boundaries between containment, fragmentation and release. Her work interrogates what it means to shore oneself up, excavating harsh truths about who or what we need to find calm amidst chaos. The artist invites but also subverts references to nature, story, home and family life in an attempt to question our constant search for comfort both in our bodies and in our environments. Her work positions the act of painting as world-building, with each canvas concealing and revealing itself in equal measure. Currently preoccupied with the motif of dream walks, MacDonald’s work simultaneously inhabits the micro and the macro, the internal emotional world and the external sublime of the natural world. At once, her work oscillates between pain and pleasure, fear and hope, the familiar and the unknown, entrapment or escape.

New Collection: Dream Walks

Put one foot in front of the other, keep your eyes on the horizon and don’t forget to breathe...

In MacDonald’s latest collection of dreamed up landscapes, many contain solo figures or couples who tread with trepidation on paths which stretch way out in front of them. The full collection is being exhibited at Jersey's Central Market.
