The Stories Hidden in Contemporary Landscape Paintings

A contemporary landscape is never just a painting.

We did not hear the birds as they flew by, we were thinking of things more important to us at the time.

When I am creating my contemporary landscape paintings maybe I am standing at the edge of a woodland path, to look across at a rolling hillside, or watch the last light fade from the sky, we rarely experience the scene as a collection of trees, fields and clouds. Instead, we connect it to memories, emotions and personal experiences.

This is the idea that sits at the heart of my contemporary landscape paintings. While the paintings are inspired by nature, they are not intended as records of specific places. They are imagined worlds where stories unfold, emotions linger and viewers are invited to discover their own narrative within the scene.

Beyond Traditional to Contemporary Landscape Paintings

Traditional landscape painting often focuses on accurately capturing a particular location. Contemporary landscape art offers something different, it is more concerned on how the landscape makes you feel.

As a contemporary acrylic artist, I use the landscape as a starting point rather than a destination. The places I paint are often constructed from fragments of memory, observations made while walking, favourite colours, imagined spaces and emotional responses to the world around me, particularly my own limitations of physicality.

A winding path might come from a walk through a woodland years ago. A cluster of houses may represent the idea of home rather than an actual village. A dramatic sky may reflect a feeling rather than a weather condition.

These elements come together to create modern landscape paintings that are rooted in both reality and imagination.

Many of my paintings begin with a simple question.

What happens next?

Perhaps a lone figure is standing at a crossroads maybe beneath the moonlight. Perhaps someone is making their way through a colourful garden towards a place of safety.

The landscape provides the setting, but the story belongs to each viewer and open to different interpretation.

Storytelling through art has always fascinated me because every person brings their own experiences to a painting and although my feelings are a starting point, I hope they are universal. What feels hopeful to one viewer may feel nostalgic to another. A journey that appears adventurous to me might remind someone else of a challenge they have already overcome. This openness is the reason why I hope the narrative landscape painting continues to resonate with my audience. The paintings become personal in unexpected ways.

Creating Atmosphere with Acrylic Paint

Acrylic paint allows me to build rich layers of colour and texture that help shape the emotional atmosphere of a painting.

One of the advantages of acrylic landscape painting is the ability to work quickly and intuitively. Layers can be added, altered and developed throughout the creative process, allowing the story within the painting to evolve naturally. I always work on several paintings at the same time in the hope they will gel together as collections and colour plays an important role in this process.

My deep blues suggest mystery and reflection.

Warm yellows and golds can evoke optimism and comfort.

Rich greens often symbolise growth, renewal and connection to nature.

Rather than reproducing colours exactly as they appear in the natural world, I use them to communicate mood and emotion. This approach helps transform familiar landscapes into contemporary paintings that feel both recognisable and dreamlike.

I am safe in the knowledge that I can create beauty in my own small world.

Why Nature Remains Such a Powerful Inspiration

Nature continues to inspire me because it reflects the human experience so perfectly.

The changing seasons remind us of cycles of loss and renewal.

Woodland paths encourage us to think about journeys and choices.

Open horizons represent possibility and hope.

Gardens become symbols of care, growth and belonging.

These themes appear repeatedly in my landscape paintings and prints because they are universal. Regardless of where we live or what experiences we have had, we understand what it means to search for direction, seek comfort or look forward to a new beginning.

Nature provides a visual language that speaks to all of us, they are emotional spaces.

My dreams pool and swirl as I climb even higher.

My Journey Continues

I am noticing more and more that my paintings have themes. As I have been an artist for a very long time now I notice that my paintings follow themes and that they keep repeating like a rhythmn through my work.

The colour combinations, the memories, and fragments of the stories that haunt me spark one idea after another. Through the layers of acrylic paint, the ideas gradually develop into contemporary paintings filled with atmosphere, symbolism and possibility.

The finished artwork may depict a path, a garden, a village or a woodland clearing, but beneath the surface it is always exploring something more profound.

It is asking questions about where we have been, where we are going and what we hope to find along the way.

Because to me,

in the end, the most compelling landscapes are not about geography.

They are about being human.
